CV Advice for Nurses and Healthcare Job Seekers

What is a CV (Curriculum Vitae)?

A Curriculum Vitae, better known as a CV, is Latin for “The Course of One’s Life/Career”. It is a summary of a person’s professional life and work experience, highlighting your personal details, work history, education, qualifications, achievements and interests.

Why do Nurses and Healthcare Job Seekers need a CV?

A CV’s main purpose is to make a potential employer interested in finding out more about you, and help them decide whether or not to invite you to an interview. Often, hospitals and healthcare organisations receive a large number of responses from nurses and healthcare job seekers to job advertisements so it is vital that you make your CV stand out from other candidates.

CV Hints and Tips

    • Ideally keep your Nursing CV to 2 sheets of A4 paper. If printed out, use good quality white paper.
    • Make sure your Nursing CV is well spaced out so that it is neat and easy to read and understand. Bullet points are useful to highlight relevant skills and experience and help break up continuous text.
    • Honesty is definitely the best policy and CVs should be based on the truth. Do not make false claims that can’t be substantiated.
    • CVs for Nurses should be positive. Emphasise your skills, capabilities and achievements. Use positive and decisive words such as achieved, managed, organised, supervised, performed, and excelled.
    • Explain any breaks in your employment i.e. periods of unemployment, maternity leave, studying for a qualification.
    • Use succinct sentences and avoid jargon/abbreviations. Disorgnised CVs are often discarded.
    • Ensure all dates are accurate and up to date. Prospective employers will reference check to confirm details.
    • Focus on information which is relevant to your own career goals.
    • If you are making a career change within Nursing or Healthcare, stress your transferable skills to support your new career objectives.
    • Grammar and spelling must be correct. Spell check for grammatical or spelling errors and then proof read it a final time.
